Construction of the Forbidden City began in 1406 during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty and was completed in 1420. Serving as the center of political power for over 500 years during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it witnessed numerous historical events and dynastic changes. The architectural layout, intricate decorations, and the vast collection of cultural relics all reflect the ingenuity of ancient craftsmen and the profound heritage of Chinese civilization. The Forbidden City is not merely a palace but a living chronicle of China's illustrious past.

1. In-Park Attractions:

Key attractions within the Forbidden City include the three grand halls—Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Central Harmony, and Hall of Preserving Harmony—as well as the residential areas like the Palace of Heavenly Purity and the Palace of Earthly Tranquility. Each structure is steeped in historical significance and royal tradition, with exquisite carvings, vibrant paintings, and a design that exemplifies ancient Chinese architectural mastery.

2. Tour Routes:

A classic tour begins at the Meridian Gate, following the central axis to visit the Hall of Supreme Harmony, then proceeding to the Palace of Heavenly Purity, the Palace of Earthly Tranquility, and finally the Imperial Garden. To avoid peak crowds, an early morning visit is advisable. For a quick 2-hour tour, focus on the exterior views of the main halls and a brief overview of the historical layout.

3. Best/Not Recommended Seasons:

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit due to pleasant weather, ideal for extensive walking tours. Although the Forbidden City is open in summer, it tends to be hot and crowded, while winter is cold but less crowded, offering a more tranquil experience.

4. Transportation:

The Forbidden City is centrally located in Beijing with excellent transportation options:

  • Public Transport: Take Subway Line 1 to Tiananmen East Station (approximately 3-5 RMB fare). Several bus routes also serve the area.

  • Private Car/Taxi: From the city center, the journey takes about 15-20 minutes with a taxi fare of around 30-50 RMB; from Beijing Capital International Airport (approximately 30 km away), it takes about 40-60 minutes by taxi costing around 150-200 RMB.

  • High-speed/Regular Train: The Forbidden City is within the city center and easily accessible from Beijing Railway Station and Beijing South Railway Station by short walk or bus.

5. Tickets & Additional Fees:

  • The peak season is from April 1 to October 31, with a ticket price of 60 yuan per person.

  • The off-season is from November 1 to March 31 next year, with a ticket price of 40 yuan per person.

  • Tickets for the Treasure House are 10 yuan per person, and tickets for the Clock and Watch House are 10 yuan per person. 

  • Some special exhibitions, audio guides or customized interpretation services require additional charges.

6. Special Notes:

The Forbidden City is closed on Mondays (except on public holidays), so booking in advance is essential. Large bags and prohibited items are not allowed inside. 

7. Luggage Storage: 

Lockers are available near some entrances within the Forbidden City, or you can use luggage storage services offered by nearby hotels or tourist centers, typically costing around 10-20 RMB per item on an hourly basis.
