1. Attraction Introduction
Luodai Ancient Town (洛带古镇), located 20km east of Chengdu, is a 1,700-year-old Hakka cultural hub known as "China's Hakka Town." Famous for its Ming-Qing architecture, Hakka traditions, and the Dragon Dance Festival, it features well-preserved alleyways, ancestral halls, and the iconic "One Mile Street" lined with snack stalls. Don't miss the Hakka Tulou (earth buildings) and tea houses serving "Smoked Duck" – a local specialty.
2. Historical Background
Luodai Ancient Town has a history spanning over 1,700 years, dating back to the Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 AD). Initially a military outpost, the town gradually evolved into a bustling commercial center, thanks to its location along ancient trade routes.
During the Tang (618–907) and Song (960–1279) dynasties, Luodai became a thriving town known for its mature tea production and silk trade. Its Hakka culture, brought by the Hakka people who migrated to the area from Southern China, adds a unique element to the town’s charm. The Hakka-style architecture, with its distinctive brick-and-timber houses, is still visible in the town today.
In the late 20th century, Luodai's ancient streets and buildings began to deteriorate, but in recent decades, the town has undergone restoration efforts to preserve its cultural heritage while promoting tourism. Today, Luodai Ancient Town is a blend of history, culture, and local traditions, with its tea houses, craft shops, and temples attracting visitors seeking to experience its authentic atmosphere and historical significance.
