Overhanging Great Wall
A steep, cliff-hugging section of Jiayuguan's Great Wall in Gansu. Built on a 45° ridge, it offers dramatic desert views & thrilling climbs.
1. Introduction
The Overhanging Great Wall (悬壁长城) is a dramatic, steep section of the Jiayuguan Great Wall system, clinging to the slopes of the Black Mountain (黑山) like a "wall hanging in mid-air." Built in 1539 during the Ming Dynasty, this 750-meter-long restored segment features a 45-degree incline, offering panoramic views of the Gobi Desert and surrounding peaks. Unlike the crowded Badaling Wall, it provides a rugged, immersive experience with fewer tourists.
2. Historical Background
Constructed under the supervision of General Li Han, the Overhanging Wall was designed to reinforce Jiayuguan Pass’s defenses against Mongol invasions. Its strategic position on the Black Mountain cliffs made it nearly impossible for enemies to scale. Unlike brick-based sections in eastern China, this wall was built with compacted earth and local gravel, blending into the arid landscape.
After centuries of erosion, the wall was partially restored in 1987 for tourism while preserving its original military layout. Today, its "hanging" illusion—created by the steep cliffs—makes it one of the most photogenic Great Wall segments.
